First Devon Art Fair for Torquay's Riviera International Conference Centre

First Devon Art Fair for Torquay's Riviera International Conference Centre

The Riviera International Conference Centre (RICC), Torquay is looking forward to welcoming Arte in Europa to the Bay, organisers of the first ever Devon Art fair that will be taking place at the RICC this October. This inaugural event is expected to attract 44 Galleries from around the UK and Europe, bringing with them an eclectic mix of fine, modern and contemporary artworks for visitors to the fair to admire and purchase.

Literally hundreds of artists will be represented at the fair with many instantly recognisable names sharing wall space with professional artists, recent graduates and self taught individuals.

Paintings, drawings, sculpture, glass and ceramics will be making up this spectacular showcase ensuring that this event will appeal to everybody from avid collectors to novice first time buyers.

Andy Naismith of Arte of Europa said:
"We have been considering expanding and putting on a third event for quite some time but historically have had difficulties in finding a venue flexible enough to suit our requirements".

"The South West was always on our radar due to the extremely active art scene, and when we felt that the economic situation was improving, we started looking at specific venues in the region and the RICC seemed to fit the bill for what we were looking for."

"We are sure the people of the South West and Torquay will warm to the fair, bringing 44 individual galleries, who will be showing literally thousands of high quality artworks from hundreds of professionally represented artists, under one roof will be the first for the region and something we hope to build on and continue to the host at the RICC for many years to come. Hopefully it will quickly become a major event in the local social calendar which the public can look forward to each year."

The fair will open on Thursday 30th September, with a Charity Preview Evening and Champagne reception and thereafter from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd October during the day.

In line with this the Devon Art Fair has announced it is headline sponsor of TAMED, a contemporary art exhibition by Torbay Council at the Spanish Barn, Torre Abbey Historical House and Gardens, from 6th July to 20th August.

This exciting exhibition will include an artwork installation by arguably, one of the world's most intriguing, infamous and controversial artists, Damian Hirst.

The work is a floor based sculpture, weighing 6.5 tonnes comprising a cow and a calf, each cut in half and preserved in a pair of glass walled tanks in a formaldehyde solution. Mother and Child, Divided was created for exhibition at the 1993 Venice Biennale and was subsequently the focal point of the 1995 Turner Prize at Tate Britain (then The Tate Gallery), the year that Hirst won the prize.

Although it is widely acknowledged that it takes less than 3 minutes to make a decision when interviewing a candidate for a job vacancy, decisions relating to other processes, such as choosing a venue for your next conference, generally take a little longer. For the British Hip Society this was a most definite exception!
